Chapter 15

It was just after eleven thirty when they brought Robert Haskins in. He had come voluntarily, so they settled him into an interview room and gave him a Coke.

We watched him through the one-way glass for several minutes before entering the room. He was noticeably nervous, though not excessively so.

We decided that Kate would do the interview and that I would observe, jumping in with questions if I needed to. Lonnie would watch through the one-way glass.

“Hey Bobby,” Kate said, sitting down on one of the two chairs opposite him—I took the other. “Thank you for agreeing to come in and talk to us.”

“I didn’t think I had a choice,” he said.

“Yes, of course you did. In fact, you can leave right now if you want. However, if you do…”

“It’s okay,” he said. “I don’t mind, but I need to get back to work. I can’t afford to lose—”

“Good,” Kate interrupted. “We’ll get you out of here as quick as we can. Now, just to keep things straight, I’m informing you that this interview is being recorded. Is that okay with you?”

He nodded.

“Speak up, Bobby. For the record, please.”

He looked her in the eye and said, “Yes. That’s okay. Are you going to tell me my rights?”

“I hadn’t planned on it,” she said. “You’re not under arrest. This is just an informal chat.”

“If it’s informal, why are you recording it?”

“Like I told you, Bobby, it’s for the record. To protect you and us.”

“Okay,” he said slowly, obviously not quite buying it, but not sure enough to make a fuss. “How can I help?”

“Let’s talk about your truck,” Kate said casually.

His eyes flickered from her to me and then back again. He didn’t answer.

“Bobby?” she asked.

“Yeah, okay, what about it?”

She looked down at her iPad. “Well, we have the report back from forensics, and it was pretty much the way you said it would be. We found Maggie’s fingerprints all over it, inside and out, and we found some hairs which we think are probably hers, but…” She paused, looked again at her tablet. I watched his face. He waited. He had this tic thing going at the corners of his mouth.

Stress? Maybe.

Finally, she looked up at him and said, “Bobby, we found blood in the cab, her blood, on the passenger side door.”

Whoa, Kate. That’s a bit of a stretch. We don’t know that for sure yet.

He was nodding. “Yeah, under the door handle, right? She’d tripped coming down the steps and skinned her knuckle on the brick wall.”

“When was that, Bobby?” Kate asked.

“I dunno, last week? A few days before she… It was lunchtime. I took her to Panera. Monday. It was Monday last week.”

“And which hand?” Kate asked.

“Her right. It was the knuckle of her middle finger. I know ’cause she couldn’t get the Band-Aid I gave her on right, and I had to do it for her.”

I took my phone from my pocket and texted Doc Sheddon,

Hey Doc. Is there any sign of a scrape on Maggie Hart’s right hand?

The answer came back almost immediately.
